When you work in the landscaping industry in Florida, you encounter many risks at work each day. Working together with your employer, you can implement practices to aid you in performing your job without compromising your safety.

One of the most effective ways to avoid hazards and reduce your exposure to danger is with an awareness of the types of risks you could encounter.

Heat exhaustion

As a landscaper, your work takes place outdoors. This means you could spend consecutive hours doing strenuous work under the sun. Consistent exposure to heat can cause you to feel weak and uncomfortable but can lead to more serious problems including heat exhaustion. Excessive exposure to the sun’s rays can also increase your risk of skin cancer if you do not take precautions to protect yourself.

Some of the things you can do to stay safe when working in the sun and heat include the following:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • Invest in a water cooler that keeps your water cold
  • Take periodic breaks in the shade when possible
  • Wear proper clothing including a hat
  • Wear and reapply sunscreen with at least a 50 SPF

Pesticides and equipment

Chronic exposure to pesticides can cause mild allergies that morph into severe poisoning if you are not careful. According to the Laborers’ Health and Safety Fund of North America, pesticides can enter your body through your skin, eyes and mouth. To protect yourself, wear long pants, eye protection, gloves and shoes.

When you work with equipment that uses motors, gasoline and blades to operate, you have to practice extra care. Follow the safety protocols your employer recommends. Make sure equipment receives required maintenance to reduce your risk of injury because of faulty operation. When using landscaping equipment, you should always make sure you are alert and vigilant of your surroundings. Avoid distraction and never arrive to work under the influence.
